Laurianta is a prosperous elven village (1,200 elves and 200 humans), made so by virtue of the fast-flowing Laure (“Golden” to the humans) River (so named because of extensive deposits of iron pyrite (fools’ gold) in the riverbed rocks, which catch the sun’s rays and glow warmly in the water).
The industrious villagers have built several water wheels to operate their mills, saws (the wood from Laurianta is recognized for its quality, and some of the finest furniture is made here), and other enterprises. In so doing, they manage to produce as much many larger villages, while having plenty of time for leisure.
Outsiders claim that the Laurianta is so named because elves built a bridge of gold, but the village’s name, in fact, stems from the fact that the Laure is a dangerous river to ford for the unwary – this place is one of the few safe places to cross it, and the village grew up around the sturdy bridge that was built here centuries ago. Lauriantans frown upon trips deeper into the Enchanted Forest by outsiders.
